Climate control systems

Climate control systems for display cases are divided into two sections: active and passive control methods. Active climate control means that we inject purified, humidity controlled air and/or nitrogen into the display case. In addition, it is possible to actively influence the temperature inside the display area. As well as exterior influences, the art objects can off-gas emissions themselves, which leads to a concentration of corrosive pollutants within the display space. With our active climate control system we create a constant slight overpressure, which continuously rinses the display area and provides the highest degree of dust protection.

Passive climate control can be achieved to an extent by means of humidity-absorbing materials, such as Silicagel, which keep the relative humidity inside the display case at an even level. These materials need to be re-conditioned and/or  exchanged regularly and can only provide a stable relative humidity, they cannot offer a „rinsing-effect“ for the exhibition space by the injection of purified air.

 

Clean air- and humidity control modules for HAHN- climate control systems

Our HAHN RK-2 clean air and relative humidity control unit directs filtered air and the chosen humidity to the inside of the display case. The resulting air pressure also prevents dust and other contaminants in the air entering the display volume. All RK-2 units are equipped with a catalyst inside the water tank.


With GLASBAU HAHN’s optimized HAHN RK-2-MOL® CLEAN-Process harmful germs, spores and particularly corrosive vapours like sulphur dioxide within the ambient air are significantly reduced or eliminated prior to entering the display case. This way, material damage caused by airborne pollutants is prevented.

The key technology of the HAHN RK-2-MOL® CLEAN-Process is a heterogeneous catalytic converter. Under proper operation it will provide an air purification level fully satisfying conservation demands. The independent Institute DTE Dr. Tauchnitz Engineering and the certified testing lab Mattersteig & Co Engineers have reviewed and tested the process with excellent results. The device has been GS certified.

The modular system HAHN RK-3-N2 can fulfill most of the conservation requirements combined with a nitrogen injection plus temperature and humidity control. Thanks to this device a nitrogen concentration of 99.7% can be achieved. Nitrogen gas prevents the oxidation of metals and offers protection against fire and harmful UV radiation. The concentration is also sufficient to kill any harmful insects. As nitrogen is a chemically inert gas, it is a pragmatic method of controlling pests inside museums without any potential danger for the exhibited and stored artefacts.

The climate control devices are modular. They can be connected to our software program HAHN CON-TROL which records the relative humidity and temperature data which can then be checked from remote locations. Additional Information  is available upon request.
