The completely refurbished Augustinermuseum reopened, presenting its treasures in special display cases by HAHN.
Augustinermuseum, Freiburg
Germany, 2010
The completely refurbished Augustinermuseum reopened, presenting its treasures in special display cases by HAHN.
In March 2010 the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg was re-opened to present its collection dating from medieval times to the 19th century, inside newly designed rooms and museum cases manufactured by GLASBAU HAHN.
The Architect Prof. Christoph Mäckler, in close cooperation with Project Manager Detlef Zinke and Chief Conservator Christoph Müller, had definite ideas on how to present the ancient sacred artefacts in the context of contemporary museum design. They wanted the new showcases to be almost invisible while still offering easy handling and flexible lighting options for changing exhibitions.
GLASBAU HAHN have built 5 free-standing cases with natural stone bases, and 4 wall cases with steel back panels inserted into the wall. One wall case 14 m long is the major highlight. Built without any walls inside, seven sliding door panels function with an opening mechanism only 60 mm high, allowing comfortable handling in spite of of a minimum of visible structure. Bevelled glass to glass edges close the door panels to the top panel, which supports the light system without an additional light box on top. The Architect and the Museum Management desired an integrated light system without any light box. HAHN provided a perfect LED solution with the power supply embedded in the glass top, with ball bearing LED heads fixed directly to the glass, and optional miniature lenses to flexibly adjust the distance to the light source.

Germany, 2009
Jubilee of 25 years and safeguarding the museum located above the historical building with arcades of the 18th century
This unique Museum devoted to toys and dolls is located on the 1st floor of a historical
building ensemble in Hanau Wilhelmsbad in Hesse. It has undergone a major programme of
refurbishment during 2008 and 2009. In its 25th year, the Museum not only celebrated its
silver jubilee, but also installed a new floor on top of the run down ceiling of the hall dating
back to the 18th century.

perfectly match the existing ones. The result is a new Museum in a historical setting in
apparently ageless display cases.

Dr. Maren Raetzer-Heerwagen, the Director of the “Dolls’ Museum”, is extremely satisfied with the case design and claims that “in spite of standing in a slanted position over many weeks, the
display cases perfectly survived all of the stress and vibrations during the building phase. We
are very fortunate to be owners of such high quality caseworks, and we are already raising
funds to buy the next display cases from GLASBAU HAHN”.
